Mineral Makeup Explained
Mineral makeup is now becoming common place in the cosmetic industry. Whilst not exactly a new phenomenon (Egyptian) women used to paint their skin with crushed minerals over 2000 years ago), mineral makeup has come a long way since its humble beginnings.
There are literally hundreds of different brands to choose from. The tricky part is deciphering the ingredients and ensuring that you choose a producct that will work with you skin, not against it.
True mineral makeup does not contain talc, oils, synthetic preservatives (like methyl paraben), synthetic fillers (like polymethyl methacylate PMMA or nylon) synthetic dyes, fragrances or waxes. A pressed compact will almost always contain some sort of wax and/or filler which can irritate the skin and clog the pores, hence defeating the purpose of wearing a natural mineral makeup.
A pure mineral makeup should always be in a loose poweed form which is indicative of being free from waxes, oils and fillers. However, there are many brands on the market that claim to be "mineral makeup" and have the powdered texture.
The winning ingredients in good quality mineral makeup include mica, iron oxide, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. The natural minerals are crushed into microscopic sized particles into a silky creamy powder form:
Titanium Dioxide: Provides coverage and acts a a physical barrier to work as a natural SPF. It can be included anywhere from 6% to 25% in mineral foundation. The higher the concentration, the more opaque the finished product will be and the higher SPF it will have.
Zinc Oxide: Works in much the same way as titanium dioxide - provides coverage and protects from UV. Zinc is also healing for the skin, particularly skin prone to redness, acne or breakouts, irritation or sensitivity.
Mica: Creates the bulk of most mineral makeup formulas. Acts as a filler and gives a creamy, smooth, light-reflective quality to the makeup. It is transparent mineral mined from various parts of the world in thin sheets, with India having the most deposits. Mico comes in various luminosities, ranging from matte to highly shimmery.
Iron Oxides: Necessary to give colour to makeup. they come in multiple colours with red, yellow, black and blue being the most popular.
As for staying power, when applied properly mineral makeup does not dissolve in oil or water, so once applied it seldom r
equires touch ups and won't slide off your skin on a hot day. At the end of the day, it's easy to remove - a regular cleanser will do the trick.
The application method for mineral makeup is key to a beautiful, even coverage. The 3 step "Swirl, Tap, Buff" process makes for easy, flawless application. It takes a bit of getting used to, but once you get the hange of it, you won't ever want to use traditional foundation again.
